Comment:

 This seems to be one of many performance regressions in 7.10 which has
 mysteriously improved with 8.0. There have been a variety of performance
 improvements made in 8.0; it would be great to know which of these helped
 here. You, the reader, can help here by identifying which commit(s) are
 responsible for this improvement.
