 I should note that the problem of adding instances to core libraries
 degrading compiler performance is a rather general theme. It can also be
 found in 4e6bcc2c8134f9c1ba7d715b3206130f23c529fb, which adds a number of
 instances to `Data.Monoid` and regresses compiler allocations by 5 to 10%.
