 Perhaps we should open a separate ticket for this? I think the plan in
 https://ghc.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/12784#comment:15 goes beyond the
 original scope of this ticket, which was to identify a regression between
 8.0.1 and 8.0.2.
