 Looks like the confusion was due to the lack of a proper specification of
 the `EmptyCase` extension, in particular about the operational semantics
 of it. Maybe someone feels like extending
 https://downloads.haskell.org/~ghc/latest/docs/html/users_guide/syntax-
 extns.html#empty-case with a sentence or two on that?
