 I've merged this to `ghc-7.10` - also, Reid, I committed
 753b156dc6b0c38b106c390952750fb800bf27e7 copying your comments from
 Phab:D894 - so we can hopefully fix the problem you pointed out in the
 future. We should probably open a bug for this, though...
