 Thanks to everyone who worked on this, particularly @ezyang for exploring
 the earlier solution and @gcampax for writing most of the patch I just
 committed.

 @ezyang, I suggest making a separate ticket for experiments with
 reorganising the block descriptors if you want to follow up on that.
