 This is part of the solution to #7961, which I am actively working on. But
 don't hold your breath -- it won't be done for a few more months, and then
 I have to convince folks to merge my branch with significant changes in
 it.

 If someone else wants to address just this point on a shorter timeline, go
 ahead!
