Comment:

 Simon M: might you re-instate the previous fix, helpfully identified by
 Yuras, pending a more glorious resolution.  (With a pointer from the fix
 back to this ticket.)

 I'll make the priority high, because it seems easy and much better than a
 runtime crash.
