 ok, 7.8 Tip builds fine, but the rebased patches on top,
 https://github.com/cartazio/ghc/compare/ghc:ghc-7.8...cpp_settings somehow
 totally break building libraries. And i'm quite stumped  about how they
 could be causing that.  (partly because i'm not familiar with that part of
 the build system in details)

 I'm not going to have time to revisit this for another week or likely two
 (perhaps three depending on things i cant predict). If someone wants to
 figure out whats going on or write a better patch in the mean time, please
 do!
