 I finally managed to figure this out, thanks in part to some debugging
 tips from `slyfox` on `#ghc`.  The two necessary patches are attached, and
 I'd appreciate review.  With this, I've been able to completely bootstrap
 GHC 7.8 on this architecture, albeit without GHCi for now.
