 I believe I've now addressed all of these.

 It's still not entirely clear to me whether there is a consensus that
 breaking the interface with base (as done in
 https://github.com/bgamari/ghc/commit/871b193cc0c3450e6ce92ae4a0f3d90c5fc38c05
 and https://github.com/bgamari/packages-
 base/commit/78fb57c5834844b8bbc61833c7f0fac54e11bf36) is the right thing
 to do at this juncture.
