Comment(by igloo):

 Looks like this is related to us having 2 copies of the base library
 around.

 The crash happens sometime around a call to `absolute_time` in
 `libraries/base/cbits/DarwinUtils.c`. This file doesn't exist in 7.4,
 which explains why it worked then.
