stage2 build fails

git clean -dfxq && git submodule foreach git clean -dfxq
That made it work! Thank you.
(Of course I have no idea *what* file 'make maintainer-clean' isn't removing, but maybe we should not worry over-much.)

| which worked reliably for me (beware that this removes any untracked
