Small change to the recursive Makefile mechanism, to ensure that we get
the correct pathname for the toplevel directory.

Where a directory is a symlink, there is a difference between `pwd`
and $(PWD) in Makefiles - the former gives the absolute location,
the latter gives the expected (symlinked) location.
