Log Message:
  Remove more than 100 lines of obsolete code from the treatment of the
  FFI.  This is partly because all foreign functions are now IO-free by
  the time they get to the backend, and partly because I reversed the
  decision to treat tupled results as C structs for marshalling purposes.
