I googled around, found that the standard response was to delete lock
files by hand, logged in and hunted for things that looked like lock
files and were owned by me.  They were in the directory I was
committing to (I don't seem to have been committing to multiple
directories at the time) and had names like you say.  For safety, I
copied them into my home directory so I could move them back if it
didn't help.
