  Log:
  - added config.guess testing of target/host platform (i.e., start using
    AC_CANONICAL_SYSTEM)
  - use the output of AC_CANONICAL_SYSTEM to hopefully give the C compiler
    under AIX the right set of options. (Also changed how the darwin-specific
    C compiler settings gets tweaked).
