Excellent! Now I get much fewer failures.
Checking the first one, it fails due to an assertion failure -- which is
turned on by DEBUG! But probably indicates a bug nevertheless?

from validate:
Unexpected failures:
    equal(normal)
    process006(normal)
    set(normal)
    simpl014(normal)
    tc(normal)
    termination(normal)
    while(normal)

from testing equal:
=====> equal(normal)
cd . && '/Users/me/modified/ghcvaltest/compiler/stage2/ghc-inplace'
-no-recomp -dcore-lint -dcmm-lint -Di386_unknown_linux
-dno-debug-output -c equal.hs    >equal.comp.stderr 2>&1
Compile failed (status 256) errors were:
ghc-6.9.20080603: panic! (the 'impossible' happened)
   (GHC version 6.9.20080603 for i386-unknown-linux):
	ASSERT failed! file typecheck/TcMType.lhs line 520 t_aeQ{tv} [tau]
