Okay: Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

Isn't there some editor which allows you to configure the tab settings but 
still is whatever-you-like-about-ed enough for you to use?

Never change your tab-width.
