I should clarify:

I'd like to install the Haskell Platform side by side with the
bleeding edge of any of the packages that are part of HP.

With this restriction your suggestion above can be limited to require
a special name for the packages in HP only, e.g. haskell-hp-*.
Bleeding edge packages would continue to be called haskell-*.
