 I don't know for sure that it's a bug.  The ''apparent'' intent of
 errorWithoutStackTrace was not being followed, so I wanted to draw
 attention to it.  If someone with familiarity with the decisions behind
 the implementation declares this to be intended behavior, the ticket can
 be closed.
