 I think I will be happy with whatever people come up with here. I filed
 the bug originally as I was surprised by the change in behavior. As Simon
 wrote above: it would be good if the user manual documented the behaviour
 and the underlying principles. And describes how to work around it if you
 want something different.

 As Ben wrote above ideally the final fix will also address the converse of
 this bug.
