 I'm actually not too sure that this is the right thing to do. In fact,
 I've wondered if we shouldn't *remove* all the instances for base types
 altogether. They don't really add much, do they? Generic functions
 typically require ad-hoc instances for base types, so it doesn't help to
 have these instances. Perhaps the only reason is the meta-data...
