 Drat. On further reflection I the cardinality analysis is correct.  So it
 looks as though there is a bug in the runtime system.

 '''Simon M''': might you find time to investigate?  With only two single-
 entry thunks it can't be that hard!

 I have literally no hypothesis for why a single-entry thunk could cause
 `<loop>`.
