 Take a look at [wiki:Typeable#Medium-termsolution this wiki page]. It
 includes a solution that we think can be done in time for 7.10 if there is
 a delay. What's nice about this one is that it should break no existing
 code. Depending on design decisions, we would probably warn about
 `Typeable` instances (which would no longer be necessary), but nothing
 should outright break.
