 First of all, thanks a lot, Simon.

 I'll try to build HEAD soon and see if I can test this.

 I would obviously like this to be merged into 7.10, because the bugs
 triggered by this, while seemingly exotic, are still regressions. And 7.12
 is probably a long time away ...
