 Never mind, of course that won't work: the extern symbols under this
 scheme would be pointing to non-existent `$alias` symbols. If we instead
 change the names of the definitions themselves and then allow the aliases
 to take the actual names, this plan might have a chance of working.
 Haven't yet thought about what this would require.
