Comment (by simonpj):

 As well as your last para, you seem to have found that compiling some
 particular module (is it `Data.Typeable.Internal`?) with -O2 instance of
 -O1 makes a factor of 2 difference in allocation for at least this test.
 Is that right?  If so, it'd be worth knowing why, and perhaps putting `{-#
 OPTIONS_GHC -O2 #-}` with a clear comment in that file.
