 rleslie, have you considered using Word rather than Int in your use case?

 i think this ticket raises a valid issue, and the proposal is a possibly
 valid one. But perhaps it should be evaluated on a slightly less
 compressed time scale as apart of a systematic program to incrementally
 improve the ghc numerical prelude and such?
