Comment:

 Yikes. I claimed the job intending to make the naïve fix, but that sort of
 more substantial change is probably beyond me at the moment - I'm very
 much still learning the ropes, having first downloaded the GHC source only
 a few days ago. So I think I'd better disown this & let those more
 familiar with the code take over.
