  * New low level interface for hat files: abstraction from file structure.
  bug fixes:
   accept INTEGERs with negative number of bytes in hat files
   consider recursive calls to functions within a non-toplevel definition
    properly
   improve EDT structure: treat children of non-toplevel equations as
    children of the non-toplevel equation's parent
